Die Fahrten auf den damaligen Schiffen dauerten oft monatelang und waren geprägt vom Wechsel zwischen Arbeit und Abenteuer. Das Buch schildert den Werdegang vom Schiffsjungen zum Matrosen unter dem Kreuz des Südens, auf Fahrt im Suezkanal, zwischen Madras, Rio und New York. Lange vor Beginn der computergesteuerten Containerschifffahrt wird der Alltag mit seinen kleinen und großen Abenteuern auf Tankern, Handelsfrachtern und der Hanseatic, dem legendären Passagierschiff der Hamburg-Atlantik-Linie, wieder lebendig.
About the Author: Hans-Peter Wohlrab wird 1937 in eine großbürgerliche Familie hineingeboren und erlebt die Kriegsjahre teils in Dresden, teils in Krakau, bevor er später seine Heimat auf dem Gut der Familie seiner Mutter, geb. von der Ohe, in der Heide findet. Die Lektüre eines Konfirmationsgeschenkes, des Buches "Wasser, Wind und weite Welt - Als Schiffsjunge um die Erde" von Kapitän Carl Kircheiss, weckt das Interesse an der Seefahrt und die Neugier die Welt zu entdecken. In einer Zeit, in der das Reisen Luxus ist und der Tourismus in den Kinderschuhen steckt, geht es für ihn in eine fremde, aufregende Welt mit Fahrten durch den Suez- und den Panamakanal, zwischen Hongkong, Valparaíso und San Franzisco. Auf vielen Reisen erlebt er das harte, aber auch freie Leben eines Seemanns, lernt fremde Länder und Meere kennen. Nach dem Besuch der Seefahrtschule in Hamburg erlangt er das Kapitänspatent "Auf Großer Fahrt". Die Reederei Hapag-Lloyd setzt den 1. Offizier Wohlrab Ende der 60er Jahre als Verbindungsoffizier in Europa ein. Danach folgen vier Jahre Einsatz für die Reederei als Marine Superintendent in New York und Montreal, Kanada. Peter Wohlrab ist Vater von vier Kindern und lebt heute mit seiner Ehefrau Margarete in der Nähe von Hamburg.
