Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2011 im Fachbereich Latein, Note: 2,3, Universität Bielefeld, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Der alte Mythos um den wunderbaren Vogel Phoenix besagt, dass dieser nach einer gewissen Lebensspanne verbrennt und aus seiner Asche neu entsteht. Bis in die heutige Zeit hat sich beispielsweise die Redewendung "wie ein Phoenix aus der Asche" gehalten und wird in unserem Sprachgebrauch zur Beschreibung der Erholung von einem schweren Schlag verwendet. Seine Unsterblichkeit inspiriert auch noch in der heutigen Zeit Firmen und Regisseure, die seinen Namen für ihre Produkte und Filme nutzen. Der Phoenix-Mythos reicht bis in die ägyptische Mythologie zurück. Auch bei zahlreichen griechischen und römischen Autoren findet er Erwähnung. Er tritt in den Metamorphosen Ovids auf, in den Annalen des Tacitus, in der Naturalis historia des Plinius, in den Etymolgiae des Isidor von Sevilla, bei Herodot, Pomponius Mela, Philostratos und vielen weiteren. Die Details des Mythos wurden aber immer wieder modifiziert, wobei die wesentlichen Elemente gleich geblieben sind. Thematisch interessant ist dieses im elegischen Distichon verfassten carmen, das 170 Verse umfasst, da es eine grundlegende Sehnsucht des Menschen zum Inhalt hat: Die Unsterblichkeit, ein Überwinden von zeitlichen und physikalischen Grenzen. Es spiegelt das Erlangen einer zweiten Chance, eines neuen Lebens wider. Diese Vorstellung ist in den Köpfen der Menschen bis heute verankert und hat die Verbreitung und Überlieferung dieses Mythos gewährleistet. Zudem lohnt die Beschäftigung mit dem Wundervogel Phoenix, da dieser eine ungeheuer große symbolische Bedeutung hat. In der römischen Kaiserzeit fungiert er als Symbol für die Ewigkeit Roms als Prägung auf Münzen und Särgen, aber auch als Symbol für die Erneuerung des Zeitalters und generell für die Welt. Im Christentum gilt er als Symbol für die Auferstehung. Die Elegie nimmt in der römischen und christlich-lateinischen Literatur eine besondere Stellung
