J'ai saisi au passage les Américains que j'ai vus, et je n'ai voulu faire ni un tableau ni une satire de la vie du Nouveau Monde. Ne cherchez pas sous ce titre: l'Américaine, l'étude spéciale d'une race; cherchez-y ce que vous trouverez, j'espère: -un portrait de femme. Ce que j'ai surtout visé, à vrai dire, dans le roman que je vous envoie, madame, ce n'est pas l'Amérique, c'est le divorce qui, du reste, est d'importation américaine. On divorce avec une facilité prodigieuse chez vous. Nous n'en sommes pas tout à fait là en France, mais nous marchons vite, et il n'est pas mauvais de réagir. Et vous m'approuverez d'autant plus, madame, je le sais, que votre foyer d'Amérique est comme un nid d'affections et de souvenirs, avec l'image chère de celui qui m'a honoré de son amitié. L'AMÉRICAINE Arsène Arnaud Clarétie, dit Jules Claretie ou Jules Clarétie, né le 3 décembre 1840 à Limoges et mort le 23 décembre 1913 à Paris, est un romancier, dramaturge français, également critique dramatique, historien et chroniqueur de la vie parisienne. Au cours de sa longue carrière, outre la signature Jules Claretie, il a recours à plus d'une douzaine de pseudonymes afin de publier ses oeuvres littéraires et ses articles dans la presse. Il a également utilisé, avec Charles-Edmond Chojecki, le pseudonyme collectif de Jules Tibyl. Biographie Jules Claretie collabore à de nombreux journaux, notamment au Figaro et au Temps, sous plusieurs pseudonymes. Il tient la critique théâtrale à l'Opinion nationale, au Soir, à La Presse. Ami d'Étienne Arago, il publie une analyse de ses Mémoires dans Le Temps du 28 mai 1892. Historien, il compose entre autres une Histoire de la Révolution de 1870-1871.
