Tout le temps qu'elle était restée au spectacle, elle avait, ou n'avait pas, écouté cette musique, amour banal des gens affectés, avec un air passablement ostrogoth, roulée qu'elle était dans un mantelet de velours écarlate doublé de martre zibeline, parure qui lui donnait je ne sais quelle mine royale et barbare, très seyante du reste au genre de beauté qu'elle avait. Elle jeta d'une main impatiente dans la coupe d'opale de la cheminée les pierres verdâtres - deux simples aigues-marines - qu'elle portait à ses oreilles; et, devant la glace qui lui renvoyait sa belle tête, elle n'eut pas le sourire si doux pour elle-même que toutes les femmes volent à leur amant; elle n'essaya pas quelque sournoise minauderie pour le lendemain; elle n'aiguisa pas sur la glace polie une flèche de plus pour son carquois.
About the Author: Jules Amédée Barbey d'Aurevilly est un écrivain français, né le 2 novembre 1808 à Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte, en Normandie, mort le 23 avril 1889 à Paris. Surnommé le Connétable des lettres, il a contribué à animer la vie littéraire française de la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle. Il a été à la fois romancier, nouvelliste, essayiste, poète, critique littéraire, journaliste, dandy, et polémiste. Né au sein d'une ancienne famille normande, Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly baigne dès son plus jeune âge dans les idées catholiques, monarchistes et contre-révolutionnaires. Un moment républicain et démocrate, Barbey finit, sous l'influence de Joseph de Maistre, par adhérer à un monarchisme intransigeant, méprisant les évolutions et les valeurs d'un siècle bourgeois. Il revient au catholicisme vers 1846 et se fait le défenseur acharné de l'ultramontanisme et de l'absolutisme, tout en menant une vie élégante et désordonnée de dandy. Il théorise d'ailleurs, avant Baudelaire, cette attitude de vie dans son essai sur le dandysme et George Brummell. Ses choix idéologiques nourriront une oeuvre littéraire, d'une grande originalité, fortement marquée par la foi catholique et le péché.
