Es Mirta Arlt, la lúcida hija de Roberto Arlt quien prologa este libro. Su lectura del mismo es existencialista. Quizás va más allá de lo que el autor se propone con su escritura.

Pensamos que el absurdo en que viven y sueñan los personajes de Los lanzallamas, no puedan interpretarse desde una sola teoría del mundo. Acaso porque el mundo en que habitan y las aspiraciones que los mueven son más bien un mejunje de creencias filosóficas y políticas que escapa a una interpretación unitaria.

El Astrólogo o Erdosain obedecen más bien a un orden en que solo existe la redención a fuerza de un empecinamiento supremo. Sin embargo, he aquí la penetrante reflexión de Mirta, que da un contexto histórico a la obra de su padre y que, aún en nuestros días, sigue conmoviéndonos:


Los lanzallamas, gran fresco expresionista, que produce en lo literario la ruptura de volúmenes exteriores y visuales de las cosas, injerta en 1931 aquel grito de Büchner: Seamos esenciales. Pero fuera de las coordenadas tempoespaciales de esa primera mitad del siglo XX -que marcha hacia la Segunda guerra mientras se gesta el existencialismo sartreano.

Roberto Arlt carece de sentido.

En cambio, si conseguimos figurar la coherencia del marco histórico, los fantasmagóricos habitantes de esta porteña Corte de los Milagros, que aparecieron ya en Los siete locos y aquí viven los episodios finales de sus vidas, pueden llegar a entusiasmarnos: nos enfrentan con un precursor tan caótico como único.

En su quinta de Temperley, el Astrólogo monologa con Hipólita; con, pues si bien monologa, la motivadora, Hipólita, no puede faltar. El replanteo esencial fluye: el sentido de la vida, nuestra civilización, la felicidad del hombre, el hombre frente a la verdad, el sentido del conocimiento, Dios, la mujer.

Y ese planteo esencial está continuado en esta serie de conversaciones por Erdosain, cuya expresión clave podría ser: Estoy monstruosamente solo [...] No me importa nada. Dios se aburre igual que el Diablo. Es un Erdosain que nos remite al existencial personaje de Yank en El mono velludo de O'Neill; como él, se siente desprotegido por el autor de sus días, arrojado a la existencia. Como él, la incapacidad de escindir el volumen geométrico de los seres, de las cosas, del hombre y del mundo, impidiéndole llegar a la realidad última y verdadera, lo devuelven a sus orígenes, y como las grandes fieras carniceras da un gran salto en el vacío, cae sobre la alfombra y despierta en cuclillas sorprendido.


¿Qué mueve a los personajes de este gran fresco expresionista? ¿Qué hace que Los lanzallamas siga teniendo una fuerza especial? Dejamos al lector la respuesta a estas y otras muchas preguntas que despierta este libro único por su estilo y por su arquitectura dramática.
