Edith Wharton escribio esta conmovedora historia sobre la abnegacion y el sacrificio en 1892, si bien no la publico hasta 1916 en el volumen titulado Xingu and other stories. A pesar de su temprana fecha de redaccion, los conocedores de su obra no dudan en considerarla una de sus creaciones mas logradas. En ella quedan patentes tanto su habilidad a la hora de desarrollar una trama como su maestria para describir el ambiente en el que se desenvuelven sus narraciones y para plasmar las motivaciones, las dudas y los anhelos de sus personajes. Edith Wharton (de soltera Edith Newbold Jones) nacio en Nueva York el 24 de enero de 1862 y fallecio en la localidad de Saint-Brice-sous-Foret, cerca de Paris, el 11 de agosto de 1937. Perteneciente a una familia de la alta sociedad neoyorquina, recibio una esmerada educacion. En 1885 se caso con Edgard Robbins Wharton, de quien se divorcio en 1913. Gran admiradora de la cultura europea, en 1907 establecio su residencia en Francia. Autora de novelas, relatos, poemas, libros de viajes y de decoracion, entre sus obras podemos destacar La edad de la inocencia (Premio Pulitzer en 1921), La casa de la alegria, Las costumbres nacionales o Ethan Frome.
