ONLINE COUNSELLING. IT'S ALL FUN AND GAMES, UNTIL SOMEONE TURNS UP DEAD.
Cat has two names. To her students at the South African academy she teaches, she's Cat. But on the mental health app, InCheck, she's Alice. If she could be a full-time counsellor, she would, but it doesn't pay the bills, so she teaches English instead.
When her roommates move out and she's left without an apartment, the pressure mounts for Cat to find a stable job. She gets a 'too good to be true' offer to teach English in Gexta-a small town in Northern Spain-with free accommodation, a monthly allowance and her work visa taken care of. For Cat, it's the perfect opportunity to buy time and reassess her options.
But when Cat arrives in the small town, strange things happen; her host family isn't who they say they are. Her new colleagues at the academy are avoiding her, and she's sure she's being watched.
Six months earlier, Lisa arrived in Gexta to start her new life. Except, it isn't what she expected. Her new mother-in-law seems to hate her, her fiancé is distracted, and his estranged sister visiting from Madrid is hiding something. Lisa's only refuge is her visits to the British couple next door, but even they aren't as forthcoming. One day, Lisa makes a shocking discovery that sends her world spiralling out of control.
As the two women's fates intertwine-and a body washes up on the shores of the small town-Cat must come to terms with her past and ask herself the question she's been running from: is she capable of pushing someone over the edge?
Fast-paced with twists and turns abound, THE LAST TIME YOU CALLED is about how every action has consequences-and despite our best efforts to conceal the truth, it always has a way of surfacing.
