Dabei ist die enge Verbindung von gesellschaftlichen und ästhetischen Funktionen in seinen Stadtmodellen von enormer Wichtigkeit. Denn Le Corbusier lieferte sowohl mit der Ville Contemporaine als auch mit der Ville Radieuse komplette Lösungsansätze sowohl für die Städte, als auch für die dazugehörige Gesellschaft. Dabei überschätzte er die Möglichkeiten des Städtebaus, denn wie heute zu sehen ist, haben weder die Funktionstrennung, noch die geometrische Ordnung vieler Stadtteile ein harmonisches Leben für deren Bewohner garantieren können. Im Gegenteil hatten die Richtlinien der Charta von Athen durchaus negative Auswirkungen auf das Stadtklima und nicht nur die für den Geschmack der meisten Bewohner ästhetische Mängel. Le Corbusiers politisches Denken war nicht ausgereift. Humanitäre Aspekte bilden mit autoritären, antidemokratischen Ideen einen seltsamen Kontrast. Auch wenn er beteuerte, an Politik nicht interessiert zu sein, ist ersichtlich, dass seine Einstellungen in dieser Hinsicht seine Kreativität gelenkt haben. Le Corbusiers Stadtvisionen sind von Anfang an starker Kritik ausgesetzt gewesen. Es erscheint jedoch wichtig zu betonen, dass seine Ideen auch nicht sachgemäß umgesetzt wurden. Es lässt sich feststellen, dass die Ideen Le Corbusiers trotz der Mängel, durchaus die Kernprobleme der Städte betreffen und teilweise auch sinnvolle Aspekte zu deren Lösung enthalten. Dies ändert freilich nichts an der Tatsache, dass seine Richtlinien, vor allem zur Funktionstrennung, letztlich zu einer Verarmung des
