PRESENTATION En 1993, j'ai voyagé seul à travers la Tunisie. Je n'y étais jamais retourné depuis 1957. C'était en avril, il faisait doux, un bonheur régnait. Ce monde devait durer toujours. Nul n'en devinait les tremblements d'agonie.(...)Le chauffeur du bus essuya soigneusement son canif et ses mains dans la serviette d'où il avait tiré l'orange, rangea le tout dans la poche de son blouson, et me dit: Vous êtes ici chez vous. Il monta dans le bus et se mit au volant. Ses paroles et ses gestes m'avaient atteint là, à cet endroit exact, comme s'ils avaient rouvert la porte de ma maison de jadis.Quand l'avion décolla, je savais que je ne reviendrais plus jamais en Tunisie. Je savais que je n'y serais plus jamais chez moi. Le chauffeur du bus ignorait qu'il en serait de même pour lui vingt ans plus tard. L'Arabie heureuse finissait.En 1993, l'islam politique n'avait pas encore ravagé le monde musulman. Le pouvoir des mollah en Iran n'avait que peu métastasé hors de ses frontières. Le front islamique du salut en Algérie était neutralisé, croyait-on. Le monde musulman était presque pacifique, un homme pouvait y voyager seul en sécurité. Parti pour retrouver des lieux de son enfance, le narrateur se découvre lui-même grâce aux récits qui lui sont faits à son retour, les pièces manquantes du puzzle lui sont révélées. Mais la mémoire ment. Les souvenirs, le narrateur les a imaginés. Tout est faux, pourtant tout est vrai, il suffit de remettre en ordre les pièces du puzzle, les fragments d'une histoire qui s'échappe au fur et à mesure qu'il la reconstruit. Les souvenirs ne sont que des balises d'erreurs pour désigner des vérités. Les fantômes prennent forme et visage, mais s'effacent à peine reconnus. Les passagers clandestins descendent en route. Les preuves manquent, les témoins mentent, et quand ils ne mentent pas ils confondent. Et pourtant, arrivé au terme, les ombres ont disparu.Ce livre est le récit d'une assimilation réussie, autant que de sa face obscure. L'identité est une fausse question, elle est la réponse.L'auteur: avec une double formation d'historien et de psychologue clinicien, Jean Luc Zarka est psychanalyste. Le dernier Juif de Jendouba est son premier livre achevé.
