Le Fils du forçat (+Biographie et Bibliographie) (Matte Cover Finish): Monsieur Coumbes, portefaix à Marseille, n'a que deux passions dans la vie: son cabanon de Montredon, entouré d'un coin de jardin où le mistral ne laisse rien pousser, et la pêche aux poissons de roche pour la bouillabaisse. Un soir, il entend des hurlements dans l'appartement au-dessus du sien. M. Coumbes est égoïste et insensible mais pas assez pour laisser se commettre un assassinat. Il intervient et empêche Pierre Manas de pendre sa femme Millette. Manas est envoyé au Bagne et Millette entre au service de M. Coumbes qui accepte de s'occuper également de son fils Marius. Les années passent. M. Coumbes et Millette vivent dans le cabanon. Marius grandit sans connaître le nom de son père. Il est beau, fier et noble, mais M. Coumbes ne l'aime pas, il le trouve trop beau pour ne pas être vil et intéressé. Un jour M. Riouffe, riche négociant marseillais, vient bâtir un chalet à côté de la maison de M. Coumbes dont la vie devient un enfer. Il ne peut supporter l'exubérance de son voisin qui a l'audace de se moquer de son cabanon. Et surtout, il enrage de voir la luxuriance du jardin attenant au chalet. Fou de haine, il exige de Marius qu'il aille provoquer M. Riouffe. Marius part pour Marseille où il est reçu par Madeleine, la soeur de M. Riouffe, dont il tombe amoureux. Il accepte un arrangement à l'amiable. Hors de lui, M. Coumbes accuse Marius de lâcheté... Une histoire d'amour, de haine et de vengeance, qui, sans être une des meilleures de Dumas, se laisse lire avec plaisir.
About the Author: Alexandre Dumas (dit aussi Alexandre Dumas père) est un écrivain français né le 24 juillet 1802 à Villers-Cotterèts (Aisne) et mort le 5 décembre 1870 à Puys, près de Dieppe (Seine-Maritime). Il est le fils de Thomas Alexandre Davy de La Pailleterie (né à Saint-Domingue, actuelle Haïti) dit le général Dumas, et le père des écrivains Henry Bauër et Alexandre Dumas (1824-1895) dit Dumas fils, auteur de La Dame aux camélias. Proche des romantiques et tourné vers le théâtre, Alexandre Dumas écrit d'abord un vaudeville à succès et des drames historiques comme Henri III et sa cour (1829), La Tour de Nesle (1832), Kean (1836). Auteur prolifique, il s'oriente ensuite vers le roman historique telles que la trilogie Les Trois Mousquetaires (1844), Vingt ans après (1845) et Le Vicomte de Bragelonne (1847), ou encore Le Comte de Monte-Cristo (1844-1846) et La Reine Margot (1845). La paternité de certaines de ses oeuvres lui est contestée. Dumas fut ainsi soupçonné par plusieurs critiques de son époque d'avoir eu recours à des nègres littéraires, notamment Auguste Maquet. Toutefois les recherches contemporaines ont montré que Dumas avait mis en place une coopération avec ce dernier: Dumas s'occupait de choisir le thème général et modifiait les ébauches de Maquet pour les rendre plus dynamiques. On ne peut donc lui nier la paternité de son oeuvre, mème s'il a été aidé.
