Temple royal par excellence, Karnak a ete edifie au debut du IIe millenaire av. J.-C. pour affirmer le pouvoir de la dynastie thebaine, tout a la gloire d'avoir reuni a nouveau les forces du pays et engagee dans une politique ambitieuse, dont les effets se firent sentir jusqu'aux confins de l'Asie Mineure. Quatre siecles plus tard, c'est un site quasiment en ruines qu'entreprirent de reconstruire les Thoutmosides sur le modele de la premiere fondation, mais en l'agrandissant, le hissant a la hauteur du nouvel Empire qu'ils constituaient, lui aussi inscrit dans les traces du precedent, mais plus etendu, plus fort, plus rayonnant. Puis Thebes perdra son rang de capitale politique pour ne plus etre qu'une lointaine replique d'Heliopolis, toujours influente, certes, mais moins proche du pouvoir. Les pharaons y poursuivront toutefois la meme oeuvre d'agrandissement et de developpement que leurs predecesseurs. Certes, des histoires du temple et de ses cultes ont ete ecrites, dont certaines sont, aujourd'hui encore, des guides precieux. Mais il a toujours manque un inventaire publie, assorti d'une reflexion continue sur ces documents par lesquels les acteurs eux-memes decrivent l'histoire du temple. Croiser cette documentation avec les donnees sorties du terrain et de la reflexion des chercheurs n'est pas une mince affaire. Il n'est que de parcourir les centaines de pages de bibliographie consacree au site pour s'en faire une idee. Au-dela de la collecte documentaire, cet ouvrage procede d'une approche nouvelle dans les etudes que les egyptologues ont consacrees a l'architecture et a la construction. Generalement, en effet, c'est une demarche globale qui est preferee, les textes de Karnak servant expliquer des monuments qui ne sont pas a Karnak. Christiane Wallet-Lebrun a choisi de privilegier le contexte local, se contraignant a chercher d'abord dans la realite du temple l'explication des documents qu'elle presente. Autant dire que cet ouvrage n'est pas constitue seulement de la totalite des textes de construction et de leurs documents annexes, organises chronologiquement et topographiquement et commentes un par un. Chaque terme etudie est replace dans son contexte architectural, et c'est un commentaire perpetuel, une interrogation constante que le lecteur va suivre, page apres page, document apres document.
