La tétralogie de l'ancien futur" se déroule dans l'archipel imaginaire de Guama, un petit monde proche (au nord-est de la Guyane) mais demeuré insoupçonné (grâce au miracle d'anomalies magnétiques et de courants ) avec ses humains, sa flore, sa faune spéciales, métissés d'apports familiers. Le héros, Augustin Coriac y aurait disparu vers 1881. Le descendant d'un ami le recherche et entend le témoignage ancestral d'un vieil indien de la côte guyanaise (Ier tome), qui le conduit à découvrir les mémoires de Coriac (2e à 4e tomes). Le roman de Guama est d'abord la vie de tout un univers, dont se dévoilent peu à peu la richesse et les dangers, les terroirs, les villes et les habitants. Augustin (venu là pour trouver le secret de ses origines) y est emporté contre son gré dans les affaires de populations turbulentes et d'acteurs machiavéliques. Au cours d'une saga effrénée, saisi par l'amitié, l'amour, et la haine, la tristesse et l'espoir, il y surprend des mystères plus excitants que celui qui l'a guidé jusqu'à l'étrange archipel (la recherche d'une porte temporelle). Au cours du 1er tome (L'Archipel-Monde), le héros (accompagné de son fidèle compagnon Jean Latoile et d'un escorte d'aventureux Guyanais -les Aruyambi-) accoste la plus grande île, La Majeure, demeurée naturelle et sauvage, près de la pacifique bourgade de Michemin. Il va y rencontrer l'amitié d'un hardi hobereau (Phial d'Atoy) et sillonner avec lui chemins forestiers, couloirs souterrains, marais pestilentiels et vertigineux apics. Il est vite confronté à la violence des jeux de pouvoir, et se heurte à ceux qui souhaitent abattre la jeune et belle clotonoise Nadja Benjou, à laquelle il promet de transmettre un message. Nadja ayant été emportée par un aigle géant (un Crocaster), Augustin la recherche. Sur ses traces, il fait connaissance avec le peuple de Conteurs de Logatrou, avec les Pathiolans adeptes de courses mortelles de chevaux sauvages, avec, enfin, les Mortanglars, sinistres contrebandiers vivant de la traite d'étranges zombies bestialisés (les Thrombes). La Majeure subit la férule du gouverneur Mungabor, retranché dans son haut palais de Trigône. Phial, convoqué pour rendre compte, y emmène Augustin qui évite l'arrestation de peu (sur l'aile volante conduite par le Nain Satius). Ayant échappé aux soldats lancés à sa poursuite, il commence à entrevoir les arcanes du "Grand Equilibre", la guerre entre forces militaires et politiques de l'archipel, autour de deux enjeux: -le commerce des Thrombes, qui paraît un ressort essentiel de l'économie, -le phénomène du "Grand Dragon", un monstrueux courant marin qui, en séparant les îles, limite les rapports entre gens de l'ouest et gens de l'est. Il existerait, dit-on, un "maître des vannes" capable d'en contrôler le flux. Les puissants cherchent à s'en saisir: si le courant baissait, il serait en effet possible aux tribus belliqueuses de l'Ouest d'envahir facilement les îles orientales, plus paisibles.
