About the Book

Nikolaï Vassiliévitch Gogol-Ianovski est né le 19 mars 1809, au domaine de Vassilievka, près de Sorotchintsy, district de Mirgorod, province de Poltava. Il appartenait à une famille de petits propriétaires ruraux, attachés aux moeurs patriarcales que toute sa vie il affectionnera. Son père, qui avait l'humeur gaie et se piquait de littérature, composait des comédies légères pour le théâtre d'amateurs de son riche voisin et parent éloigné, D. P. Trostchinski, haut dignitaire sous Catherine, Paul et Alexandre. L'ancien ministre faisait figure de mécène; les fêtes qu'il donnait dans sa splendide résidence de Kibentsy semblent avoir vivement impressionné le jeune Gogol: on en retrouve l'écho dans les Âmes Mortes. En 1821, grâce à la protection de Trostchinski, il entre comme pensionnaire au collège de Niéjine, petite ville de la province de Tchernigov, où les libéralités posthumes d'un autre parvenu petit-russien, le prince A. Bezborodko, avaient créé un établissement d'enseignement appelé à devenir, sous le titre (rare en Russie) de lycée, une sorte d'université. Pour le moment, ce n'était encore qu'un modeste gymnase. Gogol y resta jusqu'en 1828. Élève médiocre, plus qu'à la salle d'études il se montre assidu à la salle de spectacle: il monte des pièces, griffonne des scénarios, se révèle acteur accompli. En 1831, il s'est lié avec le critique Pletniov, qui le met en relations avec les poètes Joukovski et Pouchkine; celui-ci exercera sur lui une forte influence et lui fera vraiment prendre conscience de son talent. Tous deux l'introduisirent chez madame Smirnov, très grande dame, protectrice attitrée des écrivains, qui lui rendra plus d'un service et ne sera pas la dernière à le pousser dans la voie mystique. Le 7 octobre 1835, Gogol écrit à Pouchkine: J'ai commencé d'écrire les Âmes Mortes. Le sujet donnera un très long roman qui sera, je crois, très amusant. Je suis arrêté au troisième chapitre. Je cherche un bon homme de loi, avec qui je puisse me lier. Je veux, dans ce roman, faire voir toute la Russie, ne fût-ce que d'un seul côté. Je vous en prie, donnez-moi un sujet quelconque, amusant ou triste, mais purement russe. La main me démange d'écrire en même temps une comédie. Les Âmes Mortes seront dorénavant la grande pensée de Gogol. Durant ces années, il est vrai, il revoit Tarass Boulba, en lui donnant une note à la Walter Scott; il termine Le Manteau, retouche son théâtre, refond Le Portrait, commence une nouvelle: Rome, demeurée inachevée, médite même d'autres ouvrages. Mais ce ne sont là que des répits dans la grave ascension qu'il s'est imposée.
