Saqqara, ou s'eleve la pyramide de Djeser (vers 2700-2670 av. J.-C.), fut l'un des plus importants centres politiques, economiques et religieux de l'Egypte jusqu'a la conquete arabe. C'est aussi l'un des sites egyptiens les plus anciennement fouilles. Le Louvre conserve plusieurs milliers d'uvres qui en proviennent. Cependant de nombreux secteurs rapidement explores dans le passe ont sombre dans l'oubli, demanteles par des fouilles incontrolees ou enfouis sous les deblais. Les campagnes menees par la mission archeologique du Louvre ont revele tout un pan de l'histoire du site. Ces travaux s'inscrivent dans la tradition du musee qui a toujours eu a cur d'associer l'archeologie vivante a l'etude de ses collections. Saqqara abrite des tombeaux tres anciens, aussi bien royaux que prives: le mastaba d'Akhethetep (vers 2453-2420 av. J.-C.) conserve au Louvre en est un exemple eclatant. C'est en 1903 que le service des Antiquites de l'Egypte vendit a la France le tombeau (en arabe mastaba) d'Akhethetep. Seule la chapelle decoree fut demontee et transportee a Paris. Aucun document d'archives ne decrivait le monument. Son emplacement ne figurait sur aucune carte. A peine savait-on qu'il avait ete extrait d'une zone situee a quelques centaines de metres de l'angle sud-est de l'enceinte de Djeser. L'etude du mastaba du Louvre a commence en 1991 sous la direction de Christiane Ziegler. Lorsque les archeologues arriverent sur le site, ils commencerent a degager un vaste secteur bouleverse par des fouilles anterieures. Une epaisse couche de sable, charriee par le vent du desert, avait recouvert tout ce qui etait demeure en place. D'annee en annee, differents niveaux d'occupation humaine ont ete degages et etudies, revelant, sur une hauteur de pres de 10 metres, l'histoire de ce secteur durant 3000 ans. Cet ouvrage est le premier d'une serie qui sera entierement consacree aux fouilles de Saqqara.
