About the Book

English summary: Through close analysis of a wide selection of classical texts, this study explores the notion of female power in ancient Greek society. Pushing the mythical Amazons to the farthest confines of the world, writers from Herodotus to Strabo rejected the idea of female power or a community of females. From the archaic period to late Antiquity, this clear essay shows that feminine power was a myth the Greeks never believed in.
