De Machiavel a Agrippa, de Teofilo Folengo a La Mothe Le Vayer, de Sebastian Brant a Rabelais, le symbole de l'ane revient avec insistance dans la litterature de la Renaissance; son role devient meme decisif dans l'Expulsion de la bete triomphante de Giordano Bruno, comme dans sa Cabale du cheval pegaseen. Analysee ici pour la premiere fois, la conception brunienne de l'asinite reserve d'autant plus de surprises qu'elle repose sur une forte contradiction: a l'asinite negative (oisivete, arrogance, unidimensionalite) s'oppose en effet une asinite positive (labeur, humilite, tolerance) que notre tradition culturelle a trop souvent perdue de vue. L'ane, dans la perspective ouverte par Nuccio Ordine, a la double nature des Silenes d'Erasme: derriere son ingrate apparence se dissimulent des tresors. L'auteur en presente quelques-uns, tout en invitant a une lecture de textes souvent inedits en francais et a un reexamen des grands themes de la philosophie de Bruno: science et connaissance, mythes et religion, langue et litterature. Cette nouvelle edition est enrichie d'un dossier iconographique augmente et d'un avant-propos d'Ilya Prigogine. Nuccio Ordine, professeur de litterature italienne a l'Universite de Calabre, est specialiste de la Renaissance et de Giordano Bruno, a qui il a consacre deux ouvrages: Le Seuil de l'ombre. Litterature, philosohie et peinture chez Giordano Bruno (2003), et Giordano Bruno, Ronsard et la religion (2002). Il a aussi publie Le Rendez-vous des savoirs. Litterature, philosophie et diplomatie a la Renaissance (1999) et Traites sur la nouvelle a la Renaissance (2002). Fellow du Hardvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies et de la Fondation Alexander von Humboldt, il a enseigne dans divers instituts de recherche et universites aux Etats-unis (Yale, NYU) ainsi qu'en Europe (Ecole Normale Superieure, EHESS, Paris-IV Sorbonne, Paris-VIII, Institut Universitaire de France, CESR, Warburg Institute). Avec Yves Hersant, il dirige trois collection de classiques aux Belles Lettres ( Les oeuvres completes de Giordano Bruno, Bibliotheque italienne et Le corps eloquent ). Il codirige aussi, avec Alain Segonds, la collection la collection Theatrum sapientiae (Les Belles Lettres - Nino Aragno Editore).
