È un periodo convulso e controverso quello della transizione dal muto al sonoro che, a cavallo tra la fine degli anni '20 e l'inizio degli anni '30, rivoluziona e trasforma la scena della cinematografia mondiale, con specificità nazionali, spesso ancora da approfondire. L'intento di questo libro - frutto di un'ampia ricerca di dottorato svolta all'inizio del nuovo millennio presso l'Università degli Studi di Roma Tre - è quello di indagare, in Italia, il passaggio dal cinema silenzioso delle origini, in cui le ombre vagano sullo schermo come pesci muti in un acquario, ai nuovi fonofilm, in cui si canta e si parla, ed è pertanto necessario non solo essere fotogenici, ma anche fonogenici. A far da supporto a questa indagine ed esplorazione sono soprattutto le riviste e i periodici cinematografici nazionali d'epoca, analizzati a partire dal 1927 - anno della prima proiezione americana del "Cantante di jazz", pellicola che notoriamente decreta la nascita ufficiale e internazionale del cinema sonoro - fino al 1932, data di adozione del doppiaggio in Italia. Queste testate documentano l'evento, nonché l'avvento della cinematografia parlata, e ne costituiscono una preziosa mappatura. Film come "Napoli che canta", "Rotaie", "La canzone dell'amore", "Resurrectio", "Nerone", "La tavola dei poveri", "La scala", "La segretaria privata", "La telefonista", "Due cuori felici", "La stella del cinema" sono stati scelti e studiati come casi significativi e rappresentativi delle questioni messe in campo dal sonoro.
About the Author: Stefania Carpiceci è docente di Storia del cinema presso l'Università per Stranieri di Siena. Collabora da anni al progetto enciclopedico della Storia del cinema italiano, edito dal Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia e dalla Marsilio Editori, per il quale scrive saggi e svolge ricerche bibliografiche, filmografiche e di documenti d'epoca e ricopre un ruolo di coordinamento editoriale. È curatrice di volumi dedicati a Silvana Mangano, Pietro Germi e Franco Cristaldi e autrice di numerosi saggi e articoli pubblicati su riviste come Bianco e Nero, Carte di Cinema, Cinema/Studio, Filmcronache, nonché in volumi collettivi come l'Enciclopedia del Cinema della Treccani o le edizioni Marsilio per la Mostra Internazionale del Nuovo Cinema di Pesaro. È socia del sncci. Ha organizzato rassegne e retrospettive cinematografiche per l'Estate Romana di Massenzio.
