Le point de depart de ce travail est le probleme de la secularisation du theatre allemand au XVIIe siecle. On a cherche a savoir si, dans le premier drame silesien a intrigue profane qu'est "Papinianus," les reminiscences religieuses temoignaient seulement de l'inertie de la tradition, dont le drame scolaire s'efforcerait de secouer le joug, ou au contraire d'un reel attachement a une problematique sacree que l'auteur s'efforcerait d'etendre meme a des sujets profanes. Apres avoir dresse l'etat de la recherche, on a tente d'etablir la "poetique" du drame de martyr a l'epoque de Gryphius, et examine dans ce contexte un drame de martyr ayant valeur de modele a ses yeux: la "Felicitas" de Caussin, ce qui permet de dresser l'inventaire des materiaux du drame de martyr repris, ou abandonnes, dans la trame de "Papinianus." Une telle comparaison montre, au-dela des differences manifestes, une profonde identite de procedes et d'intention entre les deux pieces, revelant un auteur moins preoccupe de depasser le drame de martyr que de le sauver dans ses aspects essentiels. Certes, ce souci d'enrichir l'archetype favorise l'excroissance d'elements apparemment profanes, tels le drame du tyran et de l'intrigant. Mais il apparait que, chez Gryphius, de tels personnages ramenent au probleme religieux car ils sont concus de facon polemique par un esprit lutherien orthodoxe desireux d'incarner respectivement deux theories qui, dans le domaine de la politique et de la morale, menacent les bastions de la religion au XVIIe siecle: le machiavelisme et le stoicisme. La volonte de paganiser la fable dramatique revele donc chez Gryphius non le desir de "seculariser" le drame de martyr, ni meme de le "deconfessionnaliser," mais seulement celui de le "de-catholiciser," en le liberant de l'hagiographie et de la tutelle des jesuites."
