Ce volume contient, je crois, toutes les nouvelles d'Oscar Wilde qui n'avaient pas encore été traduites en français. J'ai dû à la gracieuseté de M. Walter E. Ledger les textes sur lesquels j'ai traduit _le Fantôme de Canterville, Un Sphinx qui n'a pas de secret et le Modèle millionnaire_. Je dois au même écrivain des éclaircissements sur différentes difficultés qui m'ont prouvé qu'on ne sait jamais complètement une langue quand on n'a pas vécu dans les pays où on la parle. Je lui dois enfin des notions bibliographiques exactes dont j'ai usé, d'ailleurs, avec discrétion pour ne point déflorer le travail bibliographique très complet qu'il a en préparation, avec un ami d'Oxford, sur les oeuvres d'Oscar Wilde. Que mon généreux correspondant trouve ici le témoignage de ma gratitude! J'ai puisé les textes du Portrait de Monsieur W. H., des Poèmes en prose et de l'étude l'Âme humaine sous le régime socialiste dans les collections des Revues citées dans mes notices bibliographiques, collections que la Bibliothèque nationale possède heureusement complètes. En traduisant le Portrait de Monsieur W. H., je me suis permis deux corrections qui m'ont paru correspondre à des fautes d'impression. C'est à Mary Fitton et non à Mary Finton que l'on a attribué un rôle dans l'histoire des Sonnets et, selon toute apparence, c'est à P. Oudry que Wilde fait attribuer par ses amis le faux portrait de Monsieur W. H., bien que le Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine ait imprimé Ouvry. Enfin, ce m'est un devoir de reconnaître que pour les versions des fragments cités des Sonnets, j'ai beaucoup emprunté aux traductions de François-Marie-Victor Hugo et d'Émile Montégut. Suum cuique.
