Un jeune homme, Maxime, et deux jeunes filles, ses voisines, excités par les exploits de Jéricho, forban de la Méditerranée, jouent aux pirates dans le domaine de Mirador, une villa perchée sur une hauteur du massif de l'Esterel et dominant un golfe, près d'Antibes. Sa propriétaire, Nathalie Malnosen, est une jeune et riche héritière orpheline dont la beauté provient autant de la perfection absolue de ses traits que de leur expression même . Elle attend deux amis de son père, ses invités du jour: Forville, directeur de la société d'exportation Manolsen et son éternel soupirant, et le docteur Chapereau. La conversation va tourner sur le fameux Jéricho, dont la rumeur raconte contradictoirement les faits les plus cruels ou la générosité la plus noble. Chapereau propose alors en échappatoire aux disputes un autre héros qu'on a trouvé, naguère, naufragé à la pointe d'Antibes et plus mort que vivant. Cet homme étrange, miraculeusement rétabli mais demeuré amnésique, est surnommé le baron d'Ellen-Rock, du nom d'un jardin antibois[2]. Il s'est lancé avec énergie dans les affaires et s'est désormais enrichi dans des transactions immobilières entre la Côte d'Azur et Paris. Le récit passionne toute l'assistance et en particulier Maxime et la romantique Nathalie. Ce personnage va mystérieusement surgir dans la vie des deux résidents de Mirador et s'imposer en défenseur. Il a, dit-il, dans la journée, en passant en canot, surpris une conversation secrète de malfrats étrangers qui parlaient de piller le soir même une villa de la côte située en haut d'une falaise. On pense tout de suite à la bande de Jéricho...
About the Author: Marie Émile Maurice Leblanc est un écrivain français né le 11 décembre 1864, à Rouen, et mort le 6 novembre 1941, à Perpignan. Auteur de nombreux romans policiers et d'aventures, il est le créateur du célèbre personnage d'Arsène Lupin, le gentleman-cambrioleur. On peut visiter la maison de Maurice Leblanc, à Étretat, en Seine-Maritime. L'aiguille d'Étretat forme d'ailleurs l'un des décors du roman L'Aiguille creuse. Biographie: Maurice Leblanc est le deuxième enfant d'Émile Leblanc, armateur de trente-quatre ans, et de Mathilde Blanche, née Brohy, âgée de vingt et un ans. Il eut pour soeur cadette la cantatrice Georgette Leblanc, qui fut l'interprète de Maurice Maeterlinck et sa compagne de 1895 à 1918. Il refuse la carrière que son père lui destine dans une fabrique de cardes et monte à Paris pour écrire. D'abord journaliste, puis romancier et conteur (Des couples, Une femme, Voici des ailes), il éveille l'intérêt de Jules Renard et d'Alphonse Daudet, sans succès public. Il fréquente les grands noms de la littérature à Paris: Stéphane Mallarmé ou Alphonse Allais. En 1901, il publie L'Enthousiasme, roman autobiographique. En 1905, Pierre Lafitte, directeur du mensuel Je sais tout, lui commande une nouvelle sur le modèle du Raffles d'Ernest William Hornung: L'Arrestation d'Arsène Lupin. Deux ans plus tard, Arsène Lupin est publié en livre. La sortie d'Arsène Lupin contre Herlock Sholmès mécontente Conan Doyle, furieux de voir son détective Sherlock Holmes ( Herlock Sholmès ) et son faire-valoir Watson ( Wilson ) ridiculisés par des personnages parodiques créés par Maurice Leblanc.
