About the Book

Arthur Schnitzler, né à Vienne le 15 mai 1862 et mort à Vienne le 21 octobre 1931, est un écrivain et médecin autrichien. L'adjectif associé à son oeuvre et à sa pensée est schnitzlerien ou schnitzlérien . Biographie Arthur Schnitzler naît le 15 mai 1862 à Leopoldstadt (2e arrondissement de Vienne). Son père, Johann Schnitzler, était un laryngologue réputé. Les comédiens et cantatrices qui constituaient la plupart de sa clientèle donnèrent très tôt au jeune Arthur un goût de l'esthétique et une irrépressible envie d'écrire. À treize ans déjà, il avait écrit près de vingt pièces de théâtre dans différents genres. Après avoir étudié la médecine à l'université de Vienne en 1879, il obtient son doctorat de médecine en 1885 et travaille à l'hôpital général de Vienne, mais finit par abandonner la médecine pour se tourner vers l'écriture. Cependant, son père, qui l'avait destiné à la carrière médicale, s'oppose assez fortement à cette vocation littéraire. Aussi Arthur ne devient réellement écrivain qu'à trente et un ans, à la mort de Johann Schnitzler, qui survient le 2 mai 1893, à l'âge de cinquante-huit ans. Il est l'auteur de pièces de théâtre, de nouvelles et de romans. Son univers est particulièrement onirique et il est difficile, en le lisant, de ne pas penser à Freud. Celui-ci disait d'ailleurs: Je pense que je vous ai évité par une sorte de crainte de rencontrer mon double. Ses oeuvres ont été très controversées, notamment en raison de leur description franche de la sexualité et de leur opposition à l'antisémitisme. Il a été traité de pornographe après la parution de sa pièce La Ronde (Reigen). Il est le grand-père de l'écologiste Michael Schnitzler. Synopsis Le château de la Mogère, un des lieux de tournage du film. Dans l'esprit de la commedia dell'arte, un Casanova vieillissant et qui pourrait se contenter de séduire avec facilité sa logeuse, est poussé par sa vanité à tenter de faire la conquête d'une jeune fille, dont il aboutira à faire le malheur.
