Il conquit le public des theatres avec ses pieces en un acte ou il traite crument des relations amoureuses (La Ronde). Chef de la "jeune Vienne" aux cotes de ses amis Stefan Zweig et Hofmannsthal, il excelle surtout dans la nouvelle ou le roman court (Mourir, Mademoiselle Else). Sa connaissance de la psychanalyse lui permet d'explorer le subconscient de ses personnages comme dans sa celebre Traumnovelle. Son erotisme et son opposition a l'antisemitisme l'exposerent a la controverse. Decede en 1931, il est desormais considere, avec Musil, Svevo ou Proust, comme l'un des maitres de la litterature de la premiere moitie du XXe siecle.
