" ... Ainsi, en écartant de trop nombreux emprunts, si nous recherchons ce qui nous appartient véritablement en propre, que trouvons-nous ? Le paysage, les peintures d'animaux et le tableau de genre: triste bilan, quand on se reporte aux richesses d'autrefois. La grande peinture, les tableaux religieux, les compositions historiques dans l'acception traditionnelle du mot, ne se composent que d'imitations plus ou moins habiles. L'originalité ou plutôt le germe d'originalité de l'époque actuelle, c'est un sentiment des harmonies du monde physique que l'antiquité ne semble pas avoir connu, que l'âge chrétien n'admit qu'accessoirement et qui reste le seul goût, la dernière aspiration d'une génération vieillie. Ce sentiment encore instinctif revêt, chez la masse, une expression grossière, et n'est qu'une sorte de protestation brutale contre les anciennes traditions. Ce sont les réalistes purs. Chez quelques-uns, et c'est un bien petit nombre, il est accompagné d'une recherche de l'idéal, d'un certain parfum de poésie intime, senteur avant-courrière peut-être d'un printemps nouveau. Si ces deux éléments, naturalisme et rêverie, parviennent à se combiner dans une juste mesure si le premier ne se développe pas de façon à absorber le second et à nous conduire, de dégradations en dégradations, jusqu'aux dernières extravagances du matérialisme hollandais, l'art moderne aura rencontré une formule durable et féconde. Le salon de 1849 exprime assez exactement la phase présente d'incertitude et de transition. À ce point de vue, il offre un intérêt tout spécial. Imitation et fantaisie réaliste, ces deux tendances, qui partout prévalent sur les anciennes distinctions d'écoles, nous indiquent le seul ordre logique à suivre dans ce dépouillement des derniers travaux de la peinture contemporaine..."
