Een oude Keltische legende vertelt dat er tijdens de nacht van Samhain (het Keltische Nieuwjaar), die toch niet alledaags is, omdat hij niet behoort tot het afgelopen jaar dat net voorbij is en evenmin tot het nieuwe jaar dat nog moet beginnen, men in de nevelen die de wereld van de levenden scheiden van die van de geesten, een man kan ontwaren die ronddwaalt op zoek naar de weg van het paradijs. Hij draagt een lantaarn die bestaat uit een uitgekerfde pompoen waarin zich een brandend kooltje van het vuur van de hel zou bevinden.

De enige gewone man aan wie men een feest heeft gewijd dat men inmiddels overal ter wereld viert.
