Ses longs doigts pâles et nerveux préparèrent l'aiguille avant de relever la manche gauche de sa chemise. Un instant son regard pensif s'arrêta sur le réseau veineux de l'avant-bras criblé d'innombrables traces de piqûres. Puis il y enfonça l'aiguille avec précision, injecta le liquide, et se cala dans le fauteuil de velours en poussant un long soupir de satisfaction. Depuis plusieurs mois j'assistais à cette séance qui se renouvelait trois fois par jour, mais je ne m'y habituais toujours pas. Au contraire, ce spectacle m'irritait chaque jour davantage, et la nuit ma conscience me reprochait de n'avoir pas eu le courage de protester. Combien de fois ne m'étais-je pas juré de délivrer mon âme et de dire ce que j'avais à dire ! Mais l'attitude nonchalante et réservée de mon compagnon faisait de lui le dernier homme avec lequel on pût se permettre une certaine indiscrétion. About the Author: Arthur Conan Doyle (né Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle le 22 mai 1859 à Édimbourg, en Écosse, et mort le 7 juillet 1930 à Crowborough dans le Sussex), est un écrivain et médecin britannique. Il doit sa célébrité à ses romans et nouvelles mettant en scène le détective Sherlock Holmes - considérés comme une innovation majeure du roman policier - et le professeur Challenger. Cet écrivain prolifique a également été l'auteur de livres de science-fiction, de romans historiques, de pièces de théâtre, de poésies et d'oeuvres historiques Arthur Conan Doyle naît en 1859 en Écosse, dans une famille catholique d'origine normande immigrée du village d'Ouilly-sur-Orne[1]. D'un père anglais Charles Altamont Doyle, et d'une mère irlandaise, Mary Foley, mariés en 1855[2], [3]. D'après la préface de la version française de La Compagnie blanche, il serait aussi un descendant des ducs de Bretagne (Conan). Cet arbre généalogique serait à l'origine de sa passion pour l'histoire, et ainsi de ses oeuvres La Compagnie Blanche et Sir Nigel. Conan est son troisième prénom, mais il l'associera plus tard à son patronyme.
