Des logements propres et confortables, des ecoles a la pointe de la modernite pedagogique, des loisirs varies, des magasins de proximite, un systeme de protection sociale contre les accidents de la vie. C'est deja a partir de 1859, au Familistere de Guise dans l'Aisne, que Jean-Baptiste Andre Godin batit un Palais social, juste aux cotes de son usine d'appareils de chauffage. Rare experimentation d'inspiration fourieriste qui a su resister au temps, le Familistere est une reponse unique et originale a la question sociale qui tenaille alors une societe en voie d'industrialisation. Dans la ruche familisterienne , la reine porte un nom: solidarite. Autodidacte frotte de spiritisme, homme politique, journaliste, auteur de multiples ouvrages a visee reformiste, Godin (1817-1888) multiplie les roles tout au long de sa vie. Mais il est avant tout un manufacturier hors normes, doue d'un sens aigu de l'innovation: ses poeles en fonte sont toujours celebres aujourd'hui. Godin est aussi un socialiste pacifiste qui s'oppose aux principes du liberalisme. Avec des succes inegaux, il experimente la democratie industrielle et promeut l'economie sociale; feministe, il agit en faveur de l'education mixte, du travail des femmes et de la parite dans la gestion des affaires du Familistere. Michel Lallement, grace a l'exploitation approfondie des archives du Familistere, restitue la vie de Godin et les principes qui guiderent son action. Sans jamais separer l'homme du contexte dans lequel celui-ci pense et agit, cette biographie est aussi celle des principales inventions auxquelles Godin donne vie. En cela, elle eclaire de profil l'histoire du socialisme et des alternatives au liberalisme economique: toutes menees au nom du caractere vital et sacre du travail, les initiatives et propositions de Godin ont connu des fortunes differentes, puisque paradoxalement, ce n'est pas entre les murs de l'usine mais bien plutot au coeur du Palais social que le travail de l'utopie a porte ses principaux fruits.
