Die Welt entwickelt sich jedoch rasant und der Wettbewerbsdruck steigt stetig. Gerade in der deutschen Volkswirtschaft herrscht eine hohe Wettbewerbsintensität. Unternehmen sind immer mehr gefordert die klassischen Handlungsansätze zu überarbeiten und innovativ zu denken. Diese Entwicklung ergibt sich einerseits aus den voranschreitenden technologischen Möglichkeiten. Auf der anderen Seite entwickelt sich die Konkurrenz am Markt schneller als jemals zuvor. Bezogen auf diese Tatsache kann festgestellt werden, dass einer der bedeutsamsten Faktoren für die Schaffung von Gewinn- und Wachstumspotenzial in mittelständischen Unternehmen Innovationen sind. Im Rahmen einer Befragung vom Institut für Mittelstandforschung (IfM) wurde erfasst, dass mittelständische Unternehmen die Sicherung der Wettbewerbs- und Innovationsfähigkeit als wichtigstes Handlungsfeld für die Zukunft erachten. Diese Innovationsfähigkeit ist laut Angaben der Befragten notwendig, um langfristig erfolgreich am Markt partizipieren zu können. Die Anwendung von Lean Thinking auf den Innovationsprozess eines Unternehmens bildete das von Eric Ries etablierte Lean Startup-Konzept heraus.Grundsätzlich ist die Verwendbarkeit der Lean Startup-Methode unabhängig von der Größe eines Unternehmens, sodass sie sowohl in Startups als auch in etablierten Unternehmen Anwendung finden kann. Mittelständische Unternehmen etablieren durch die Nutzung neuer Management-Werkzeuge und Perspektiven eine kostengünstige, weniger mit Risiko behaftete Arbeitsweise. Das Lean Startup-Konzept fußt auf der Annahme, dass das Durchführen von Experimenten in Bezug auf Produktentwicklungen sinnvoller ist, als das genaue Planen.
