About the Book

This book is about the search for a language model which would treat language as a dynamic tool of meaning-constitution and the implications of viewing first and second language teaching against such a background. In this search, it discusses in depth the concept of learner autonomy and learner participation in language use and syllabus making and illustrates the optimal exploitation of the potential for such learner investment in a language syllabus. The other highlights of this book are : 1. a wide range of references from a number of applied linguistics fields brought in to support the relevant language model 2. a section on the relationship between ELT and Curriculum Studies 3. an analysis of different approaches to the process syllabus, including the Bangalore Communicational Teaching Project 4. discussions of concepts of crucial importance in ELT such as, second language acquisition, interaction in the classroom 5. an introduction to a rich selection of tasks and their accompanying methodologies tried out in a second language teaching project 6. an exposition on the question of the role of text-books in teaching in the light of task-based learner autonomous classrooms While interest for the ELT researcher would be in all these aspects of the book, for the practising teacher the last two should provide insights for making his/her own classroom learner-centred, creative and task-based.
