About the Book

This book focuses on Learning in the Round which is a term taken from the theatre to describe an approach to learning, teaching and professional development in which three sets of actors participants, specialists and facilitators work together. Using their collective knowledge they explore work-based issues and topics in order to convert personal experience into productive knowledge. Learning in the Round acknowledges the importance of both experience and social aspects of learning by means of group interaction in order to create understanding.
About the Author: Patrick Smith has recently retired from higher education after 50 years of teaching and research, culminating in the award of Emeritus Professor. Throughout his career he has designed and implemented distinctive and innovative professional development programmes in which a deep understanding of relevant theoretical and research findings is applied to professional practice in order to develop practical insights and solutions. In recent years his interests have centred on applying these approaches in the context of work-based learning and development. Patrick continues to research and write on aspects of learning, teaching and development and is currently pursuing a consulting career within the private, public and third sectors. Chris Kemp has been active in the live music industry for the last three decades where his work as a promoter and venue manager developed his commitment to supporting work-based learning. As Professor and Pro-Vice Chancellor at Buckinghamshire New University he created the first ever undergraduate degree programmes in Music Management, Crowd Management and Protective Security. Chris is the Professor of Crowd Management and the Commercial Director of the International Centre for Crowd Management and Security Studies. He has established his own consultancy, Mind Over Matter, as a vehicle primarily concerned with promoting work-based learning and development. Teresa Moore is Head of Department of Music and Event Management and Education Director of the International Centre for Crowd Management and Security Studies at Buckinghamshire New University and is a pioneer of work-based learning and sustainability. Roger Dalrymple is Principal Lecturer and Programme Lead for Professional Education and Leadership Programmes at Oxford Brookes University. He has published a range of collaborative work in the field of practice teaching and learning and work-based education, based upon experience of facilitating programmes. Maurice Gledhill runs a flexible distance learning degree for serving airline pilots. He is a lifelong learner with a particular interest in helping colleagues learn from each other in the workplace. He has a passion for facilitating learning by means of supportive environments and is an expert practitioner.
