Über Berge, auf denen der Schnee noch nicht geschmolzen war, ging Lux Bernkule, ein junges verwitwetes Weib, mit ihren zwei Kindern, dem zehnjährigen Brun und der kaum dreijährigen Lisutt, nach dem jenseitigen Orte Klus, der ihre Heimat werden sollte. Es lebte dort der Vater ihres verstorbenen Mannes, Christoph Bernkule, in hohem Alter als Schermäuser oder Maulwurfsfänger, welches Amt ihm ein nettes Einkommen verschaffte, und bei dessen Ausübung ihn die Schwiegertochter mit ihren Kindern unterstützen sollte. Sein Sohn Henne, ihr Mann, hatte mit seinem Vater von jeher in Unfrieden gelebt, so daß er ihm Frau und Kinder niemals vorgestellt, die Ursache davon aber niemals hatte laut werden lassen; da nun der Lux die enge Rechtlichkeit und Hartköpfigkeit ihres Mannes wohl bekannt waren, bildete sie sich ein, daß auch er schuld an dem Zwiespalt getragen haben könnte, und war wohl geneigt, der Einladung des Greises Folge zu leisten, teils aus Neugier, teils aus Mitleid mit seinem einsamen Alter, und schließlich weil sie durch einen mächtigen Gönner, der ihr alles Erdenkliche an Schutz und Begünstigung zusicherte, dazu angeregt wurde. Dies war der Abt des Klosters, in dessen Nachbarschaft ihr Mann Forstgehilfe gewesen war, Wonnebald Pück, der kürzlich zum Bischof von Klus ernannt worden war und, heftig verliebt in die anmutreiche Frau, sie eindringlichst ermunterte, gleichfalls dorthin überzusiedeln, wo sie einzig auf der Welt noch Familienanhang hätte. Einem Ratschlag des alten Bernkule folgend, hatte sie Männerkleidung angelegt und stieg so behende, aber ohne sich zu eilen, den alten Saumpfad hinan, der den Fußgängern diente, mit Hilfe des kleinen Brun einen Karren bald schiebend, bald ziehend, der mit allerlei Kleidern und Hausrat beladen war, und auf dem auch Lisutt, wenn sie müde war, gefahren wurde.
