Textgrundlage ist die Ausgabe: Andreas Gryphius: Werke in drei Bänden mit Ergänzungsband. Herausgegeben von Hermann Palm, Sonderausgabe mit Genehmigung des Verlages Anton Hiersemann (Stuttgart), Darmstadt: Wissenschaftliche Buchgesellschaft, 1961 [= Nachdruck der Ausgabe Tübingen 1878-1884] Die Paginierung obiger Ausgabe wird in dieser Neuausgabe als Marginalie zeilengenau mitgeführt. Umschlaggestaltung von Thomas Schultz-Overhage unter Verwendung des Bildes: Ikone des heiligen Georg aus dem 14. Jahrhundert in Konstantinopel. Gesetzt aus der Times New Roman, 11 pt. Über den Autor: 1616 wird Andreas Gryphius in die Wirren des Dreißigjährigen Krieges in Glogau in Schlesien hineingeboren. Während seines Studiums lernt er die liberale, florierende Handelsstadt Danzig und das empirische Weltbild Galileis und Keplers kennen. 1637 nimmt er sechs Jahre währende Studien an der damals hochmodernen Universität in Leiden auf und veröffentlicht fünf Gedichtsammlungen, die ihm ersten Ruhm einbringen. Gegen Ende des Krieges kehrt er von einer ausgedehnten Studienreise nach Frankreich und Italien nach Schlesien zurück. 1664 stirbt Andreas Gryphius während einer Sitzung der glogauischen Landstände, deren Syndikus er seit 14 Jahren ist. Das Leid und der moralische Verfall sind die zentralen Themen seiner Dichtung.
