About the Book

English Summary: Despite the popularity of his ballets Coppelia et Sylvia and his opera Lakme, Leo Delibes (1836-1891) remains largely unknown. Born into a family of artists, the not-so-brilliant student distinguished himself as soon as he left the Conservatory by the quality of his operettas. After these first steps in the wake of Offenbach, the young musician reveals in 1870 all the finesse of his talent with his ballet Coppelia. Under the Third Republic, Delibes enters a controversial marriage, and pursues a demanding and personal quest, before disappearing prematurely at 54 years of age. This biography aims to revive the creative journey of Delibes by drawing on the abundant press of the time and on many new sources, and explores the personal relationships of a humble and modest man.
