Le propos du présent travail est d'établir que la personnalité n'a pas raison de fin pour la nature humaine, et que le personnalisme est une trahison de la vraie dignité de la personne, parce que la personne dit la subjectivité, et que la trahison de la dignité de la subjectivité est le subjectivisme auquel, par essence, dispose le personnalisme. Ce n'est pas le sujet psychologique, couramment désigné par le Moi conscientiel, qui a raison de fondement des attributs essentiels par lesquels on le qualifie ou définit, comme s'il était leur cause. C'est bien plutôt l'essence ou nature humaine, principe de l'identité du Moi et de son intelligibilité, qui est le sujet premier de l'acte par lequel l'essence se constitue en un existant singulier concret, dans la forme de la personnalité.

Pour le personnaliste, on n'est pas personne pour faire se réaliser une nature (humaine); on est doté ─ accessoirement ─ d'une nature pour être une personne. Le personnaliste se reconnaît éventuellement une nature au titre d'idéal kantien de la raison pure, par définition inaccessible, mais une telle nature, loin d'avoir raison de fin de celui qui tend vers elle, aura raison de moyen de se parfaire selon une progression infinie; ce qui est recherché ne sera pas la fin comme telle ou le repos dans la fin, mais l'acte même d'exercer un progrès indéfini en et par lequel s'exalte celui qui progresse et qui, de ce fait, en viendra, selon une pente existentialiste inévitable, à décider de la nature qu'il consent à se reconnaître. Cela dit, le personnalisme est riche d'une vérité captive précieuse que la tradition thomiste n'a peut-être pas toujours développée à la mesure de sa valeur spéculative et morale. Est "personne" cette substance rationnelle qui, capable d'avoir ce qu'elle est, est mesurée par une nature en forme de victoire gagnée sur le risque d'une antinature, matière sacrificielle de la vraie liberté.
