Ce livre explore l'identité de classe des agents des centres d'appels de Johannesburg. Mon intérêt pour ce sujet est né d'une contradiction apparente. D'une part, j'avais lu des ouvrages sociologiques qui décrivaient ces personnes comme appartenant à un "prolétariat des services". D'autre part, mon expérience en tant qu'étudiant travaillant dans un centre d'appel m'a montré que, dans la mesure où les agents avaient une identité de classe, c'était en tant que membres de la "classe moyenne". Alors qu'il existe aujourd'hui un nombre considérable d'ouvrages sur les centres d'appels, il y en a relativement peu sur l'Afrique du Sud, bien que ce pays possède aujourd'hui la plus grande concentration de ces lieux de travail dans le monde. En outre, la recherche a abordé la question de la classe en termes de position de classe, l'évaluation d'une personne extérieure, plutôt qu'en termes d'identité de classe, la propre compréhension de l'agent de sa position dans une hiérarchie sociale. De plus, étant donné que les centres d'appels sont à l'avant-garde de la mondialisation, qui a rendu possible la réorganisation des processus de travail, est-il possible qu'ils annoncent de nouvelles identités de classe qui correspondent à une structure de classe modifiée ? Pour étudier ces questions, trois centres d'appels ont été étudiés.
