Un an après son arrivée à Hollywood en 1914, Chaplin, né en Grande-Bretagne, est devenu le roi du burlesque aux États-Unis en jouant le vagabond. Au bout de deux ans passés sur les écrans, il a vu sa renommée s'étendre au monde entier -il a été la première star de cinéma internationale- ce qui lui a valu un contrat d'un million de dollars, faisant de lui l'un des hommes les plus riches au monde, avec un contrait à un million de dollars, son propre studio et son groupe de proches collaborateurs. De l'Alaska au Zimbabwe, le chapeau melon, la canne, le pantalon trop grand et les chaussures de clown de son «vagabond» composent la silhouette la plus identifiable au monde.
