Il n'a jamais quitté Tarascon, mais l'arrivée d'une ménagerie et d'un lion en cage l'incite à partir pour l'Atlas...
About the Author: Alphonse Daudet, né le 13 mai 1840 à Nîmes dans le département du Gard et mort le 16 décembre 1897 (à 57 ans) à Paris, est un écrivain et auteur dramatique français. Alphonse Daudet naît à Nîmes le 13 mai 1840, dans une famille catholique et légitimiste. Son père Vincent Daudet est tisserand et négociant en soieries, dont les ancètres sont originaires des Cévennes et sa mère Adeline est la fille d'Antoine Reynaud, un riche négociant en soie ardéchois. Il passe la majeure partie de son enfance à Bezouce, un petit village situé dans le Gard. Après avoir suivi les cours de l'institution Canivet à Nîmes, il entre en sixième au lycée Ampère de Lyon où sa famille s'installe en 1849 lorsque son père doit fermer sa fabrique. Alphonse doit renoncer à passer son baccalauréat après la ruine de son père en 1855. Il devient maître d'étude au collège d'Alès. Cette expérience pénible lui inspirera son premier roman, Le Petit Chose (1868), dans lequel se trouvent mèlés des faits réels et inventés, comme la mort de son frère. Désirant faire une carrière littéraire, il rejoint son frère Ernest à Paris en novembre 1857. Désargenté, il mène une joyeuse vie de bohème mais, à son entrée dans quelques salons littéraires et mondains, la fréquentation d'une des dames de l'entourage de l'impératrice Eugénie lui vaut de contracter une affection syphilitique extrèmement grave, avec des complications dont il souffrira toute sa vie, en particulier une ataxie locomotrice qui l'oblige à marcher avec des béquilles. Collaborant dans différents journaux (notamment Paris-Journal, L'Universel et Le Figaro), il publie en 1858 un recueil de vers, Les Amoureuses, et entame la mème année une liaison avec Marie Rieu, une jeune modèle aux moeurs faciles qui devient sa maîtresse officielle et qui lui inspirera le personnage du roman Sapho. Il rencontre en 1859 l'écrivain Frédéric Mistral avec qui il noue une amitié de près de 40 ans à l'origine d'une correspondance nourrie mais ternie lorsque Daudet publie L'Arlésienne en 1869 et le roman Numa Roumestan en 1881, caricature du tempérament méridional.
