Composées à la Bastille entre 1787 et 1788, ces Nouvelles héroïques et tragiques étonnent dans l'oeuvre du marquis de Sade. Loin de la férocité et de la cruauté de ses écrits précédents, Sade choisi l'aspect psychologique pour évoquer les crimes de l'amour. En véritable homme de lettres et dans un style admirable, d'une écriture riche d'une puissante modernité, il expose grâce à des personnages d'après nature le génie du vice prêt à tout pour obtenir le plaisir: sa corruption, ses froids calculs, ses inventions... mais aussi le piège qui se referme peu à peu sur l'innocence et le tourment des victimes... Certes, l'issue est tragique mais Sade donne à ses nouvelles une valeur morale écrasante car, dans "Les crimes de l'amour", le vice et ses crimes sont des miroirs, des repoussoirs. Sous sa plume, la vertu triomphe et l'innocence se venge: Florinde exécute son agresseur, lady Stralson poignarde le meurtrier de son amant... Six des onze nouvelles du recueil original précédées d'un court essai "Idée sur les romans" figurent dans ce premier volume: Juliette et Raunai ou la Conspiration d'Amboise, Laurence et Antonio, Rodrigue ou la Tour enchantée, Miss Henriette Stralson ou les Effets du désespoir, Faxelange ou les Torts de l'ambition, Florville et Courval ou le Fatalisme. Je ne veux pas faire aimer le vice; je n'ai pas, comme Crébillon et comme Dorat, le dangereux projet de faire adorer aux femmes les personnages qui les trompent; je veux, au contraire, qu'elles les détestent; c'est le seul moyen qui puisse les empêcher d'en être dupes; et, pour y réussir, j'ai rendu ceux de mes héros qui suivent la carrière du vice, tellement effroyables, qu'ils n'inspireront bien sûrement ni pitié ni amour; en cela, j'ose le dire, je deviens plus moral que ceux qui se croyent permis de les embellir; (...) jamais enfin, je le répète, jamais je ne peindrai le crime que sous les couleurs de l'enfer; je veux qu'on le voie à nu, qu'on le craigne, qu'on le déteste, et je ne connais point d'autre façon pour arriver là, que de le montrer avec toute l'horreur qui le caractérise.
