" Entre la première et la seconde partie de la vie de Molière, tout juste au point où nous nous sommes arrêté, immédiatement après la chute trop méritée de Don Garcie de Navarre, se place un événement qui fut, nous le croyons, d'une énorme importance pour l'auteur comédien, pour le développement de son génie, partant pour le progrès du théâtre en France et pour la gloire de notre littérature. Nous voulons parler de la mort du cardinal Mazarin, arrivée le 9 mars 1661, qui remit aux mains du roi Louis XIV, âgé de vingt-trois ans, depuis neuf mois marié, l'administration de son royaume pacifié et le libre usage de la royauté absolue. On sait avec quel éclat le jeune roi déclara se charger de tout le fardeau. Dans le fait, il n'avait guère alors à en voir que les douceurs, et sa souveraineté devait s'exercer d'abord sur les plaisirs, qu'il était porté de nature à aimer nobles et grands. Ce fut dans les premiers temps qui suivirent cette prise de possession que se manifesta, de la part du prince pour le poète, quelque chose de plus qu'une protection dédaigneuse et frivole, un certain mouvement d'affection intelligente, prompt comme la sympathie et durable autant que l'égoïsme. Du moment où ces deux hommes, placés à de telles distances dans l'ordre social, l'un roi hors de tutelle, l'autre bouffon émérite et moraliste encore bien timide, se furent regardés et compris, il s'établit entre eux une sorte d'association tacite, qui permettait à celui-ci de tout oser, qui lui promettait assurance et garantie, sous la seule condition de respecter et d'amuser toujours celui-là. Nous devons ajouter que jamais traité public, où la foi du monarque aurait été solennellement engagée, ne fut exécuté plus sincèrement; qu'en aucun temps, dans aucune circonstance, la sauve-garde donnée à l'écrivain contre tous les ressentiments qu'il pourrait provoquer ne parut se retirer de lui..."
About the Author: Anaïs de Raucou, dit Anaïs Bazin, né à Paris en 1797 et mort en 1850, est un historien et homme de lettres français.
