" Cette pièce, une des moins remarquables de Shakspeare, ressemble à beaucoup d'égards à un roman dialogué cette idée se fortifie quand on lit, dans la Diane de Montemayor, la nouvelle où le poëte a sans doute puisé sa comédie: soit que la Diane lui eût été connue dans une traduction, soit qu'un romancier anglais l'eût imitée ou refondue dans un autre ouvrage. Dans l'épisode de la Diane, nous voyons une bergère-amazone sauver trois nymphes de la violence de trois hommes sauvages, et leur raconter ensuite, sur la rive d'une onde au doux murmure, comment elle a été la victime des persécutions de Vénus, à qui sa mère, dans une discussion mythologique, avait eu l'indiscrétion de préférer Pallas. La belle Félismena reçoit un billet de don Félix, qu'elle lit après avoir bien grondé sa suivante, qui a eu l'audace de le lui remettre. Elle aime don Félix et se hâte de lui en faire l'aveu; mais le père du jeune homme s'oppose à leur mariage et envoie son fils dans une cour étrangère, pour lui faire oublier l'engagement qu'il n'approuve pas. Félismena ne peut vivre en son absence; elle se procure des habits de page et va retrouver son amant; mais déjà don Félix en aime une autre, et Félismena, qui passe à son service à la faveur de son déguisement, devient le porteur de ses billets doux. Célie, sa rivale, se prend tout à coup d'une tendre passion pour le page prétendu, et don Félix ne reçoit plus de réponses favorables de sa belle que quand Félismena est son messager. Cependant ce cavalier se désole des rigueurs de Célie: son désespoir devient si grand que Félismena, craignant pour la vie de celui qu'elle aime, se jette aux genoux de sa rivale, qui croit que le page va l'implorer pour lui-même. Furieuse de l'entendre solliciter pour son maître, elle ne peut supporter la vie et meurt de douleur...."
