À chaque instant tout le monde parle de l'intelligence et on semble comprendre de quoi il s'agit, mais il est vraiment très difficile de préciser. Un maître d'école, un professeur nous diront facilement: "cet enfant est très paresseux, il ne sait pas grand'chose, mas cela s'arrangera, car il est très intelligent" et ils diront d'un autre: "c'est un bon petit garçon, plein de bonne volonté, il travaille, il apprend beaucoup, il est un puits de science; mais que voulez-vous qu'on en fasse, il est si peu intelligent". Sans doute ces paroles nous donnent déjà une petite indication au moins négative; pour ces professeurs, ne rien savoir n'empêche pas d'être intelligent, savoir beaucoup, être un puits de science n'empêche pas d'être bête; mais si nous demandons au professeur: "À quoi voyez-vous que celui-là est intelligent et que celui-ci est bête ?" il ne nous répondra rien de précis et nous sentirons le vague de cette notion populaire de l'intelligence. L'homme a sans doute peu de pouvoir dans ce monde, mais il a quelque pouvoir. Quand je déplace un papier sur la table je fais peu de chose mais je fais quelque chose: le destin, les lois naturelles avaient voulu que ce papier fût à ma droite, je l'ai mis à ma gauche, j'ai changé quelque chose dans l'ordre du monde. On nous répète que l'homme a peu de durée, qu'il passe comme une ombre sans laisser de trace. Mais enfin il y a des hommes qui ont bâti des cathédrales; ces cathédrales ont changé quelque chose dans la région et ce changement se prolonge pendant des siècles. On dirait que l'homme a du pouvoir non seulement à l'endroit où il est, mais encore à l'endroit où il n'est pas: je puis déplacer un livre à côté de moi, mais je puis aussi le jeter à deux mètres, à un endroit où je ne suis pas. L'architecte qui a bâti la cathédrale a jeté son action en avant dans le temps et il a encore de l'efficience des siècles après sa mort. De quoi dépend cette efficience ? Si nous le savions nous pourrions la gouverner, l'augmenter indéfiniment et nous deviendrions maîtres de tout, maîtres même de la mort, comme disait M. Bergson. Les études publiées dans ce volume qui a pour titre Les débuts de l'intelligence, portent sur les divers stades des tendances psychologiques, afin de situer l'intelligence élémentaire à sa place dans le tableau hiérarchique de ces tendances. Puis elles portent sur l'analyse des premiers objets intellectuels, la route, la place, l'outil, le portrait, la forme. Pierre Janet, médecin, philosophe et psychologue français, fut l'une des figures majeures de la psychologie et fondateur de la psychologie clinique.
