Toute la philosophie antique est exercice spirituel, c'est-a-dire une pratique destinee a transformer, en soi-meme ou chez les autres, la maniere de vivre, de voir les choses. C'est a la fois un discours, qu'il soit interieur ou exterieur, et une mise en oeuvre pratique. C'est ainsi que Pierre Hadot (1922-2010) a represente la philosophie antique, comme une discipline destinee a aider l'homme a mieux vivre, a mieux etre, a jouir de ce qu'il vit plutot que de vivre de ses passions, finalement jamais assouvies. Les trois grandes Ecoles de l'Antiquite (epicurisme, stoicisme, cynisme) ont developpe techniques et methodes pour parvenir a un possible mieux-etre, avec en commun le souci de l'homme, de son bien-etre, de vivre le mieux possible. Toutes ont mis en exergue l'homme et sa serenite, l'homme au sein d'une harmonie lui permettant de vivre avec la conscience que la vie est courte et que le temps a vivre est incertain; que l'existence est ponctuee quotidiennement de maux, de douleurs et d'obstacles qu'il s'agit de savoir surmonter. Cet ouvrage poursuit les travaux de Pierre Hadot, comme ceux de Michel Foucault, dans une autre mesure, sur cette notion d'exercice spirituel. Toutefois si l'expression arrive pour Hadot en conclusion de ses recherches, elle est ici le point de depart. L'ouvrage commence par definir ce qu'est un exercice spirituel. Quelle est cette notion, cette expression, qui est aussi une pratique dans l'Antiquite ? L'exercice spirituel, en tant que travail a l'amelioration de soi et a sa transformation en vue d'un mieux-etre, semble - sans etre nomme - bel et bien present dans la philosophie antique, c'est meme sa raison d'etre. Toutefois, l'expression proprement dite emerge bien plus tardivement et sous des auspices qui ne sont pas necessairement lies a la philosophie. C'est pourquoi ce livre analyse en detail la notion en s'interrogeant sur les pratiques concretes, les mises en oeuvres, les theories qui peuvent s'y referer de pres ou de loin. Et par consequent quelles Ecoles antiques peuvent etre caracterisees comme instaurant et pratiquant des exercices spirituels ? Dans un deuxieme temps sont mis en perspective les axes communs aux differentes ecoles, la necessite de philosopher, savoir se preparer notamment aux maux et a la mort, savoir pratiquer des exercices et techniques, que ce soit l'ascese, l'ecriture, l'ecoute, etc. L'ouvrage met par la suite en avant les singularites de chacune, notamment celles des stoiciens par rapport aux epicuriens ou encore aux cyniques. Enfin la derniere partie ouvre sur la prolongation des exercices spirituels au-dela de l'antiquite. D'une part ses reprises a l'aube du christianisme, mais egalement dans les philosophies de la renaissance (Montaigne), de l'epoque classique, moderne (Descartes) ainsi qu'au moment des Lumieres (Shafesbury, Kant, Rousseau).
About the Author: Xavier Pavie est docteur en philosophie ( la reception des exercices spirituels dans la philosophie contemporaine sous la direction de Jean-Francois Balaude), chercheur-associe au sein de l'IREPH (Institut de Recherches Philosophiques) de lUniversite Paris Ouest. Il est Directeur de lInstitut ISIS de lESSEC Business school ou il est egalement enseignant. Il est lauteur de plusieurs ouvrages (La Meditation philosophique. Une initiation aux exercices spirituels, Eyrolles, 2010; L'apprentissage de soi: Exercices spirituels de Socrate a Foucault, Eyrolles, 2009) et darticles.
