Resume: Chateauguay, 1812. Gonzalve est un jeune colonel de 19 ans, orphelin, issu d'une noble et tres ancienne famille montrealaise, ruinee malheureusement. Il est en poste a Chateauguay, ayant pour mission de ralentir la marche de l'armee americaine vers Montreal. Il a pour ami Alphonse. Lors d'une ronde, les deux se retrouvent face a face avec trois officiers americains. Ils ramenent un prisonnier, Brand some, qui se revele un gentleman et devient leur ami. Gonzalve, un heros melancolique, revele a ses amis qu'il est amoureux de Louise de St-Felmar. Or, le pere de la jeune fille ne veut pas de lui comme gendre, sous pretexte que ses statuts social et financier ne sont pas assez reluisants. Il a meme organise le mariage de sa fille. Celle-ci, revoltee, envoie une lettre a son amoureux pour l'avertir qu'elle allait le rejoindre. Elle fuit la maison, deguisee en jeune homme. Un batelier l'aide. Or, cet homme nomme LeGrand est le chef d'une organisation criminelle tres structuree, avec des loges aussi bien au Canada qu'aux Etats-Unis. Louise est emmenee aux Etats-Unis. La, les brigands ratent un vol et elle reussit a leur echapper. Elle est recueillie par le chef de police et sa femme. Le pere St-Felmar, mais aussi Gonzalve, chacun de son cote, partent a sa recherche. Les deux finissent par se rencontrer et Gonzalve sauve d'une mort certaine St-Felmar, en restant dans l'anonymat toutefois. Par ailleurs, un echange de prisonniers permet a Brandsome de regagner son pays. La premiere partie du livre se termine par la bataille de Chateauguay, expediee en quelques pages. Comme on le sait, les Canadiens, nettement inferieurs en nombre, remportent une brillante victoire sur l'armee americaine. Nous sommes maintenant en 1813. Les soldats canadiens sont toujours en poste a Chateauguay. Brandsome a rejoint Louise dans sa famille americaine. Le pere St-Felmar, arrive sur les entrefaites (comment est-il arrive la ? Nul ne le sait!), la ramene chez lui. Le meme manege recommence. Il la tient enfermee de peur qu'elle coure vers son amant. Il a meme trouve un second pretendant pour sa fille. Mais Louise reussit a avertir Gonzalve qui accourt. Au moment ou elle doit dire oui, il apparait, ce qui permet a la jeune fille de s'evanouir (elle va s'evanouir a maintes reprises dans le recit). On la ramene chez elle. La paix ayant ete conclue, Brandsome vient visiter ses amis canadiens. Gonzalve et Louise, ulceres des manigances du vieux St-Felmar, decident de le prendre a son propre jeu. Brandsome fait mine de faire la cour a Louise, ce qui plait au vieux qui organise un troisieme mariage. Le soir precedant la ceremonie, Gonzalve et Louise, profitant du sommeil de St-Felmar et de la complicite de toute la maisonnee et meme d'un eveque, se sauvent a Montreal et se marient. On pourrait penser que le roman va se terminer ici, mais Doutre nous reserve une explication de 83 pages sur la vie tumultueuse de Gustave, le frere de Louise (personnage tres secondaire jusqu'ici), envoye en Europe des son jeune age pour etudier, et devenu chef des brigands (celui qui a aide Louise a fuir au debut du recit). Neuf ans passent. Tout le monde coule des jours heureux, sauf le vieux St-Felmar, toujours aussi fielleux. Un evenement va le ramener a de meilleurs sentiments et va permettre a Doutre de clore ce roman interminable. St-Felmar apprend que c'est Gonzalve qui l'a sauve d'une mort certaine, lorsqu'il est parti a la recherche de sa fille. Plein de remords, il fait la paix avec son gendre et decide de consacrer le reste de sa vie au bonheur des siens Joseph Doutre (nee le 11 mars 1825 et mort le 3 fevrier 1886) est un ecrivain, un journaliste, un homme politique et un avocat canadien . Directeur de l'Institut canadien de Montreal, il mena une longue lutte anticlericale contre Ignace Bourget avant de realiser que sa cause"
