"... La chute de l'empire romain et les invasions des barbares empêchèrent, pendant plusieurs siècles, non-seulement les progrès, mais l'étude de l'astronomie. Les conquérants arabes et les califes mahométans donnèrent les premiers, à une partie du monde, la tranquillité et l'ordre nécessaires aux travaux de l'esprit. Leur gouvernement, plein de générosité et de justice pour tous, favorisa dans toutes les directions l'essor de l'intelligence humaine. Les grands princes de la dynastie des Abassides remirent en honneur la philosophie et la science des Grecs. Aristote et Platon furent traduits en arabe en même temps qu'Hippocrate et que Galien; on les suivit sans les discuter, et les savants astronomes, que la générosité des califes entourait de tous les moyens d'étude et d'observation, se contentèrent de transmettre sans en accroître l'éclat le flambeau légué par les Grecs. Leurs travaux cependant montrent la complète intelligence des méthodes. La plus ancienne mesure du globe qui soit parvenue jusqu'à nous fut entreprise par les astronomes arabes, sur l'ordre du calife Almamoun. La doctrine des épicycles était malheureusement contredite par des observations précises et de plus en plus nombreuses. Les erreurs s'accumulèrent, et semblables à un fleuve dont il faut constamment déplacer les digues, les astres depuis longtemps n'obéissaient plus aux lois de Ptolémée. Les tables de l'Almageste ne pouvaient plus servir, et celles que le roi Alphonse de Castille avait fait calculer vers le milieu du treizième siècle désolaient déjà les astrologues par leur différence avec l'état du ciel. Les systèmes admis jusque-là vieillissaient et devaient être bientôt abolis. L'habileté croissante des observateurs et la précision des calculs ne permettaient pas cependant de se contenter d'à-peu-près. Purbach et son disciple Régiomontanus essayèrent en vain de relever l'édifice chancelant; leurs efforts, en en montrant la faiblesse, ne servirent qu'à préparer le triomphe de Copernic..."
