Dans "Une Rencontre", deux garçons sèchent l'école pour chercher l'aventure, pour finalement faire une expérience troublante qui expose le côté sombre de la nature humaine. "Araby" suit la désillusion d'un jeune garçon alors qu'il navigue entre ses fantasmes romantiques et les dures réalités de la vie.

À mesure que la collection avance vers l'adolescence, "Eveline" dépeint la lutte d'une jeune femme entre la promesse d'évasion et l'attrait du devoir familial. Le conflit intérieur d'Eveline et sa décision finale de rester à Dublin incarnent le thème de la paralysie, un état d'incapacité à avancer ou à changer sa situation, qui hante de nombreux personnages de Joyce.

Dans les histoires de maturité, Joyce examine les complexités de la vie adulte et des relations. "Un Petit Nuage" raconte l'histoire de Little Chandler, un homme qui rêve de succès littéraire mais est confiné par ses responsabilités domestiques. Sa rencontre avec un vieil ami qui a réussi le succès qu'il désire le conduit à une amère reconnaissance de ses propres limites. De même, "Doubles" explore les frustrations de Farrington, un copiste qui cherche à échapper à son existence monotone par l'alcool, pour finalement perpétuer un cycle de violence et de regret.

Le thème de l'épiphanie atteint son apogée dans "Les Morts", la dernière et la plus célèbre histoire de la collection. Située lors d'un dîner, elle se centre sur Gabriel Conroy, un homme fier de son statut intellectuel et social. À travers une série d'interactions et de révélations, Gabriel confronte ses propres insuffisances et la distance émotionnelle dans son mariage. L'histoire se conclut par une méditation poignante sur la mortalité et l'interconnexion de toutes les expériences humaines, alors que Gabriel imagine la neige tombant sur toute l'Irlande, symbolisant à la fois la mort et un sentiment d'unité.
