Oreste, jeune homme, revient à Argos accompagné de son ami Pylade, le fils de Strophios. L'oracle de Delphes Apollon Loxias, lui a formellement ordonné de punir les meurtriers de son père. Au lever de rideau Oreste se recueille sur la tombe d'Agamemnon et se montre déterminé à accomplir ce qu'Apollon Loxias exige de lui. Électre apparaît alors accompagnée du choeur des captives troyennes. Elle vient apporter des libations sur la tombe de son père (Choèphore signifie "porteuse de libations") sur ordre de sa mère Clytemnestre qui l'a envoyée apaiser l'âme d'Agamemnon à la suite d'un rêve qu'elle vient de faire. Oreste écoute les femmes, d'abord en se cachant, puis se fait reconnaître de sa soeur. Après beaucoup de larmes et de prières, sous la pression du choeur qui appelle la vengeance, Oreste en conçoit le plan: il se présentera au palais déguisé en étranger, annoncera sa propre mort au palais puis tuera Égisthe et Clytemnestre. Le plan se déroule comme prévu. Clytemnestre se montre fort affligée de la mort de son fils (la nourrice d'Oreste dénonce là une hypocrisie) puis ouvre les portes du palais aux deux jeunes gens. Après avoir assassiné Égisthe, au moment de tuer sa mère, Oreste hésite et consulte Pylade. Celui-ci répond qu'il vaut mieux être l'objet de haine de la part de tous les hommes que de la part des dieux, il doit accomplir l'ordre de l'oracle. Oreste tue Clytemnestre sur le cadavre d'Égisthe et montre au peuple le cadavre des deux amants ainsi que le tissu dans lequel son père fut assassiné. Désormais matricide, Oreste annonce son départ pour Delphes comme le lui a ordonné le dieu qui lui a ordonné de commettre ces meurtres. Puis apparaissent pour lui seul les terribles Érinyes, antiques divinités dont la vocation est de pourchasser sans relâche les enfants matricides.
About the Author: Eschyle, né à Éleusis vers 526 av. J.-C., mort à Géla en 456 av. J.-C., est le plus ancien des trois grands tragiques grecs.
