Depuis la premiere moitie du XIXe siecle et encore tout recemment, on a retrouve dans des tombes de Grande Grece, de Crete ou de Thessalie, des lamelles d'or, tres fines, datables du IVe au IIe siecle av. J.-C., qui contiennent des instructions destinees a guider, au cours de son voyage dans l'Autre monde, l'ame dument initiee a une doctrine mysterique, initiation sur laquelle le monde antique a reussi a maintenir le secret.Dans ce livre, ou ces textes sont tous publies et traduits, Giovanni Pugliese Carratelli fait le point sur les diverses interpretations proposees, et avance l'hypothese qu'une bonne partie de ces documents, jusqu'ici designes generiquement comme " orphiques ", sont intimement lies a l'ecole de Pythagore. Tous ces textes manifestent l'esperance d'etre delivre de nouvelles experiences de vie ici-bas, mais l'auteur insiste particulierement sur les textes ou Mnemosyne, la mere des Muses, joue un grand role: c'est elle, et elle seule, qui permet a l'initie d'echapper au cycle des renaissances et d'atteindre a la connaissance de son origine celeste. Les hommes, en effet, issus d'un premier acte d'hybris (les Titans, ayant devore Dionysos Zagreus, ont ete foudroyes par Zeus), sont contraints d'expier cette hybris dans le tissu de souffrances qu'est leur vie; seuls echappent au cycle des renaissances ceux qui recourent a la philosophie (qui, comme l'enseignent les Pythagoriciens, est placee sous le patronage de Mnemosyne) ou a l'initiation aux Mysteres.Ce livre est la traduction de la deuxieme edition de l'ouvrage italien, parue en 2001. A l'occasion de cette traduction, l'ouvrage a ete revu par son auteur et enrichi d'indices.Giovanni Pugliese Carratelli, helleniste, historien, epigraphiste, ancien directeur de la Scuola Normale Superiore de Pise, est membre de l'Accademia dei Lincei (Rome). Il est, a l'heure actuelle, conseiller scientifique du celebre Istituto Italiano per gli Studi filosofici de Naples. Parmi ses tres nombreuses publications, mentionnons: Scritti sul mondo antico (1976), Tra Cadmo e Orfeo. Contributi alla storia civile e religiosa dei Greci d'Occidente (1990) et, tout recemment, Gli editti di Asoka (2003).
