Gabriel Monod, grand historien français, nous livre avec ce texte l'oeuvre et la vie de trois maîtres de l'histoire (Renan, Taine et Michelet) dont les visions se complètent, s'opposent, se répondent et/ou se corrigent. Selon une conception, à la fois biographique et systématique, il estime que chacun de ces trois historiens incarne, à sa manière, une des fonctions du discours historien: critiquer les documents, les traditions et les faits (Ernest Renan); dégager la philosophie des actions humaines en découvrant les lois scientifiques qui les régissent (Hyppolyte Taine); rendre la vie au passé (Jules Michelet). Ce texte est d'une grande valeur pour tous ceux qui s'intéressent à l'historiographie.EXTRAIT: Les trois maîtres dont je me suis proposé d'étudier l'oeuvre et la vie, résument, à mes yeux, ce qu'il y a d'essentiel dans l'oeuvre historique de notre pays et de notre siècle. Ils se complètent, tout en s'opposant sur certains points. Je ne veux certes pas diminuer le mérite et la gloire d'Augustin Thierry, de Guizot, de Mignet, de Tocqueville, de Fustel de Coulanges; mais leur effort ne me semble pas avoir une portée aussi étendue, aussi générale, aussi profonde que celui de Renan, Taine et Michelet. L'histoire se propose trois objets principaux: critiquer les traditions, les documents et les faits; dégager la philosophie des actions humaines en découvrant les lois scientifiques qui les régissent; rendre la vie au passé. Renan est par excellence l'historien critique, Taine l'historien philosophe, Michelet l'historien créateur. Non sans doute que Renan et Michelet aient manqué du sens philosophique, Taine et Renan du sens de la vie, Michelet et Taine du sens critique; mais c'est à Renan qu'il faut demander des leçons de critique; c'est chez Taine que nous verrons la tentative la plus considérable qui ait été faite pour constituer l'histoire en science au nom d'une conception philosophique, et c'est à Michelet qu'il faut demander le secret de la vision et de la résurrection du passé.
