Lorsque des immigrants arrivent dans un pays, ils sont confrontés à un marché du travail peu connu qui a ses propres exigences. Avoir une bonne maîtrise de la langue du pays hôte et une bonne connaissance des procédures de recherche d'emploi et du fonctionnement du marché du travail sont autant d'atouts qu'ils n'ont pas forcément. Avec le temps, les immigrants peuvent acquérir ces compétences et, en principe, les performances des immigrés dans le pays hôte devraient être comparables à celles des autochtones au bout d'un certain temps. Mais en réalité, des différences persistent. Leur expérience et leurs qualifications ne sont pas toujours pleinement reconnues, le « capital social » leur fait souvent défaut, et ils font parfois l'objet de pratiques discriminatoires à l'embauche. Les nouveaux arrivants ne sont pas les seuls à rencontrer ces difficultés, il en va de même pour leurs enfants même s'ils sont nés et ont été scolarisés dans le pays d'accueil. Que faire pour améliorer l'intégration des immigrés et de leurs enfants sur le marché du travail ? Les employeurs doivent disposer des informations nécessaires et d'incitations efficaces pour évaluer correctement les compétences et les qualifications des immigrés. Les pouvoirs publics ont un rôle à jouer en stimulant l'apprentissage de la langue et la formation professionnelle, et en encourageant la diversité dans l'entreprise. Pour leur part, les immigrés doivent tenir compte des exigences des employeurs des pays d'accueil. La viabilité des futures politiques migratoires et le recours accru à l'immigration dépendent en grande partie du succès des pays de l'OCDE et des immigrés eux-mêmes dans le domaine de l'intégration sur le marché du travail. Cet ouvrage examine l'intégration sur le marché du travail des immigrés et de leurs enfants dans quatre pays de l'OCDE (Belgique, France, Pays-Bas et Portugal), et formule des recommandations propres à chacun de ces pays. C'est le deuxième d'une série qui devrait couvrir une dizaine de pays de l'OCDE.
