About the Book

English: Les Misérables is one of the best known stories in the world, available in many formats - written, musical, and film. This version is mainly for those whose first language is not French or for those who would like to familiarize themselves with the novel in an easy-to-read edition. This simplified French edition has about 4,000 unique words. This adaptation allows the reader the opportunity of reading the first volume of the novel in a version that, though simplified, strives to maintain as much as possible the Victor Hugo's style. This version has cut out much of the information that Hugo included that, though historically and culturally interesting, does not serve to move the main plot along. This book can be used in second or third year high school French classes or on the university intermediate level. Reading this work is an excellent means of growing your French vocabulary by reading a story that piques the curiosity of the reader. NOTE: This edition is not the complete novel. It is only the Fantine section of the first volume.
About the Author: You can read about Victor Hugo on page 2 of the book. Robert Loach has been a French teacher for over 40 years - 11 years teaching high school French and German and over 30 years teaching French at Bob Jones University. During his time as a high school teacher, he completed an M.A. in French Language and Literature at Eastern Michigan University where he also acquired Michigan Continuing Certification to teach secondary French and German. During his years of teaching Les Misérables, he has adapted the Fantine portion of this novel so that it can be used in either a high school or college classroom. While retaining, as much as possible, Victor Hugo's style in the original work, Loach simplified the vocabulary and the grammar to make the works more accessible to students learning French as a second language. Since most French literature through the centuries was written with literary tenses, the passé simple has been retained throughout the work. However, the literary imperfect subjunctive and pluperfect subjunctive tenses have been changed to the conversational present and past subjunctive tenses. At the back of the book there are questions about the reading to guide students as they seek to understand what they are reading, as well as to help in class discussion.
