Jeune pilote accompli, l'auteur est recruté par une compagnie malienne pour poursuivre le lien aérien entre la base de construction du plus grand barrage d'Afrique de l'ouest, et les villes alentours. La présence de l'avion de brousse est indispensable au bon fonctionnement du camp perdu au milieu du Sahel. Une nuit, le directeur de la base le réveille pour lui demander d'effectuer une liaison urgente. La mission est délicate: sauver un médecin blessé à plus de 2 000 km de sa base. Entre la vie et la mort, son état demande une évacuation d'urgence. La météo est exécrable. En dépit des risques encourus liés à l'Harmattan, ce terrible vent du désert, il fera le trajet de près de 20 heures accompagné de son copilote et d'un infirmier. Pendant les phases de tranquillité du vol qui servira de fil rouge au récit, il se remémorera des situations vécues, parfois amusantes, parfois plus graves, mais toujours étonnantes et captivantes. Nous partageons avec lui, les moments d'angoisses, le gout du sable dans la bouche, le lever de soleil magnifique, la relation entre les Hommes, parfois difficile, parfois étonnante, souvent émouvante. C'est une immersion dans un monde que seuls les pilotes peuvent connaitre.
About the Author: Né en 1953, Jean-Louis TARTEVET a passé sa vie dans l'aviation. Issu de l'école des Apprentis mécaniciens de l'Armée de l'Air, il devient ensuite pilote professionnel, puis pilote de ligne. Son parcours l'amènera d'instructeur en aéro-club aux les Antilles, jusqu'à la création de sa propre compagnie aérienne, avec des étapes de vie au Maroc et dans des pays dits exotiques. Entre temps, il deviendra successivement pilote de brousse, Commandant de bord puis cadre dans une compagnie aérienne majeure et instructeur pilote de ligne pour différentes compagnies étrangères. Son métier de pilote, il le vit comme une aventure. C'est d'abord et surtout une aventure humaine. Chaque rencontre est un trésor, un apprentissage, une découverte, un enrichissement. C'est ensuite une aventure technique car son passé de technicien lui a permis de développer une approche particulière avec les engins mécaniques. Les avions vivent. Ils ont leurs caractères, leurs souffrances leurs peines ainsi que leurs joies. Il décrit cette relation commune à tous ceux qui vivent la mécanique et reste une énigme à ceux qui ne la connaisse pas.
